This Library of videos, articles, and links is a collection of resources that we regularly reference or share with clients.
Both as parents of children with disabilities and as ParentsCAN staffers, we find the amount of material available online is so huge that it's overwhelming, especially when all we want is simple information or an answer to a question. That's why when we put together the eResource Library, we didn't try to collect all the available information but instead focused on putting together a selection of sources that we trust and use ourselves.
Children with disabilities and challenges are often stuck in systems that are very complicated and sometimes don't work that well. We want the Library to help build your knowledge and confidence as an advocate for your child when they need one, but please know that you don't have to figure it all out on your own! This Library is meant to be a supplement to our classes, workshops, and one-on-one consultations, so go ahead and contact us--our Family Support Specialists are always a great source of information and solutions.
We divided the eResource Library into three sections that we hope make it easier to find what you need. Each section has its own page in the Library:
This section of the Library includes resources for taking those first steps when you have concerns about your child’s development or are dealing with a new diagnosis for your child. On this page you'll find information on: ParentsCAN's free Developmental Screenings program; what to do if you suspect something isn't right, and how to talk to your pediatrician about it; organizations and groups that support individuals with a particular diagnosis; organizations that provide practical resources for individuals with disabilities.
This section of the library is about parenting a child with a disability through different ages and stages. We wanted to recognize that inclusion is important, but it isn't always easy. On this page, there are resources that cover: information for parents of younger kids, tweens and teens that deal with social issues and mental health; organizations that provide fun opportunities for inclusive activities; and resources for young people and their parents as the teens transition into adulthood and have to figure out what they want to do and how to self-advocate for the necessary accommodations to get there.
Your Child's Rights Under the Law
This section of the Library focuses on education, because it's an important part of a child's life and a big piece of the way we support children and families at ParentsCAN. This page of our eResource Library has videos, articles, and organization links related to: your child's rights, especially to receive a Free and Appropriate Public Education; the basic components of Special Education; and information and support to help you advocate for your child.
